Saloon Refit………Choices…Choices

June 17th, 2008 · Alacrity, Boating Life, General, Narrow Boat, Refit, Technical

I have to thank Lesley and Joe from NB Caxton and John And Kathy from NB Marmaduke for the information and recommendations they have made for comfortable easy chairs and their suppliers.

So it looks like we will be going for the chairs from IKEA.

I looked around B&Q today for solid wood flooring and liked the look of the 150mm wide natural oak planks.

Real Oak Flooring

From a laying point of view there would be less planks to glue and fit but I think that the wide planks look better in a narrow situation, I do stand to be corrected and probably will be.

So my next task is to find out the best way to fit the flooring, find a local supplier and buy it.

The Refit Starts…………..Part 1….

June 15th, 2008 · Alacrity, Boating, Boating Life, General, Narrow Boat, Refit, Technical

We started on Alacrity’s saloon refit today, with the removal of the water damaged window linings, its lucky for us just the linings are damaged and need replacement, this was mainly because the boatfitters had used steel nails and these had rusted causing the staining, the steelwork and battens were in perfect condition.

Removal of the old dinette went on apace with Jo wielding the cordless drill to great effect removing even the most chewed up screws with little effort.

We were again lucky that the boat fitters had not glued the support battens to the sapele cabin lining so only leaving us with a few holes to make good before varnishing.

It makes a great difference with the old dinette out, so much space…………

Changes to Gallery……Trying out something new..

June 1st, 2008 · General, Non Boating, Non Boating Life, Technical, Wordpress

Well I’ve been slaving…….(whose he kidding)… over a hot keyboard today trying to set up a better gallery for the blog. The plugin for wordpress was straight forward but altering the coding in the page template for the gallery took some doing for a non savvy person like me.

I will be running the two galleries in tandem for a while just to see which on suits the blog better.

If you look in the lefthand sidebar under the pages tab you will see Test-Gallery click on this and see the new gallery the Slideshow also in the lefthand sidebar is generated from this.

Batteries

May 4th, 2008 · Boating, Boating Life, Narrow Boat, Technical

Well if there was anything that would persuade me to slim down a bit it would be the hell that is topping up Alacrity’s battery bank.

You need to be a weight lifter and a contortionist just to get to them, to fill them you also need eyes that swivel independently like a chameleon so you can see how much water you are adding.

Why didn’t I remember the Durite automatic battery filler I bought from The Toolbox Shop

Durite Battery Filler

It’s worth its weight in gold and a snip at £15.

All you do is fill with de-ionised top up water and press down into the battery filler and hey presto it fills to a preset level when you take it out the spring loaded top shuts off the water so no mess……

Well back to the batteries do I ?……..loose weight ………….well maybe?…………….A bit of redesign and woodwork ………..a definite yes!
