The Odd Sock Saga……………………….

June 16th, 2008 · General, Life in general, Non Boating, Non Boating Life

I found an odd sock after this mornings wash………never mind I’ll just mate it up with the odd one I found last week………………..No I won’t…………..it’s gone missing aswell…….Upon interrogation SWMBO addmitted that she had found an odd sock in my draw and had humanly disposed of it in the bin.

I only ever buy the same black socks (M&S) so I can match up the ineviatable “odd sock” or when one becomes to holey, a new mate can be found  (Its the Yorkshireman in me).

The odd sock saga seems to be an affliction we all suffer, an equal number of socks go in the washer but an unequal number come out. Is the washing machine something other than a washing machine, is it a portal to a parallel universe, with whom we swop socks on alternate weeks, is it possible that we don’t actually lose a sock but gain one………….Do people in parts of the world who don’t use washing machines lose socks?

The UK’s population is around 61 million people and if each loses one sock every time they do laundry the mind boggles………………………..

Refitting Alacritys Saloon…..First thoughts…

June 11th, 2008 · Alacrity, Boating, Boating Life, General, Narrow Boat, Refit

Having had Alacrity for 19 years now Jo and I have decided to refit the saloon.

The saloon has a fixed “L” shape dinette which converts to a double bed since there are just the two of us and the dinette isn’t that comfortable. We were thinking of stripping it out in favour of free standing furniture. I was also thinking along the lines of a real wood floor with rugs.

Ikea Poang Chair

We have been looking at The Ikea “Poang” armchairs with footstools,  we first saw them in a cottage we rented in York, and after a day doing touristy things they were great to relax in. Ikea give them a 25 Year Guarantee and they are a flat pack item so no worries about getting them in (embarrassing moment with the new fridge and door saga necessitating removal of door frame and some skin).

We would also need a table possibly a folding one or one that hinges out from the side. anyone got any ideas?

As to the floor I’m torn between a fully real wood floor or one with an engineered core and a 5mm real wood veneer given the changes in humidity and temperature I’m not sure which, more research needed.

Blood out of a Stone…………..

March 13th, 2008 · General, Non Boating, Non Boating Life

It would be easier to get Blood out of a Stone than get a refund from my local computer shop.

Well the saga of the Netgear storage unit is over, The Computer shop finaly admitted defeat, It took them 2 days and a change of hard drive manufacturer to get the Bloody thing working so what chance did I have…………………

My argument that it was not fit for purpose, siting the “Easy installation instructions” NOT. and could they gurantee that my data would be stored safely, had them……………Result a refund…………….and a dare I say happy “Grumpy Old Man”
